Three units need to be completed:

Unit 1 – Introduction to Bookkeeping – Knowledge Test
Unit 2 – Keep double entry records and prepare a trial balance – Assignment
Unit 3 – Prepare reconciliations – Assignment

The IAB Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping is made up of three core units, each designed to develop essential foundational skills in bookkeeping and financial record keeping.

Unit 1 – Introduction to Bookkeeping (Knowledge Test)
In this unit, learners are introduced to the basic principles of bookkeeping. They will explore the purpose of keeping financial records, understand key bookkeeping terminology, and learn about the importance of accuracy in financial recording. This unit is assessed through a knowledge test, helping to confirm understanding of the fundamental concepts before progressing to practical tasks.

Unit 2 – Keep Double Entry Records and Prepare a Trial Balance (Assignment)
This unit develops practical bookkeeping skills using the double-entry system. Learners will record financial transactions correctly and learn how to maintain accurate ledger accounts. They will also be introduced to the preparation of a trial balance, which is an essential step in checking the accuracy of financial records. Assessment is completed through a practical assignment.

Unit 3 – Prepare Reconciliations (Assignment)
In the final unit, learners will develop the skills needed to carry out basic reconciliations. This includes comparing financial records to ensure accuracy and identifying any discrepancies between different sets of information, such as bank statements and bookkeeping records. This unit is also assessed through an assignment, allowing learners to demonstrate their ability to apply reconciliation techniques in practical situations.

The IAB Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping is assessed through online knowledge tests and practical assignments. The knowledge tests consist of multiple-choice questions designed to check understanding of key bookkeeping principles, while the assignments require learners to complete practical tasks such as filling in forms and recording basic financial information.

Before completing the formal assessments, learners are given access to pilot assessments to support practice and revision. These pilot assessments are not timed and can be attempted as many times as needed, allowing learners to build confidence and improve their understanding before taking the live version.

Once the pilot assessments have been successfully completed, learners can progress to the live assessments. The live knowledge tests and assignments are completed online under controlled conditions to ensure fairness and consistency. This approach helps learners feel prepared while maintaining the integrity of the qualification.
