IAB Level 2

IAB Level 2

IAB Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping

The IAB Level 2 Award in Bookkeeping builds on the foundational knowledge gained at Level 1 and develops a deeper understanding of bookkeeping principles and practical accounting skills. It is designed for learners who already have a basic awareness of bookkeeping and wish to progress to more complex financial recording and processes.

key feature of the IAB Level 2 Award in Bookkeeping is that it is partially open book, allowing learners to access learning materials for the majority of the qualification while completing assessments. It is also designed to be flexible and can be completed from the comfort of your own home, making it an accessible option for a wide range of learners.

This qualification is particularly beneficial as it is the only bookkeeping qualification at this level that includes an understanding of VAT, helping learners develop a stronger and more realistic insight into how bookkeeping is applied in business settings. This adds valuable depth to their knowledge and prepares them for real-world accounting responsibilities.

The assessment structure is designed to support learner success. Four out of the five units are completed through open book knowledge tests and assignments, allowing learners to work with support materials while developing confidence and understanding. The final unit is a live assessment completed under exam conditions, ensuring learners can demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills independently.

This blended approach makes the qualification especially suitable for learners who may lack confidence with traditional examinations or who are returning to study after a break. The combination of open book assessments and a single controlled final assessment helps reduce pressure while still maintaining high standards.

Overall, the IAB Level 2 Award in Bookkeeping builds on foundational skills and introduces more advanced concepts, including VAT, helping learners progress with confidence towards further study or employment in bookkeeping and accounting.

The IAB Level 2 Award in Bookkeeping is assessed through a combination of online knowledge tests, assignments, and a final examination. Before completing the formal assessments, learners are given access to pilot assessments which are designed to support practice and revision. These pilot assessments are not timed and can be taken as many times as needed, allowing learners to build confidence and understanding of the subject content before progressing to live assessments.

Once a learner has successfully completed the pilot assessments, they are able to move on to the live assessments. The majority of units are assessed through open book knowledge tests and assignments, allowing learners to work with learning materials while developing their understanding of more advanced topics, including VAT and sub-divided bookkeeping systems.

The final unit is completed as a timed examination under controlled conditions, ensuring learners can demonstrate their knowledge and practical bookkeeping skills independently. This structure provides a supportive progression route while still maintaining the integrity and standards of the qualification.

Overall, this assessment approach helps learners build confidence gradually, while preparing them for more advanced study or employment in bookkeeping and accounting.
