IAB Level 3

IAB Level 3

IAB Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounting

The IAB Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounting builds on the knowledge and skills developed at Level 2 and introduces more advanced accounting and bookkeeping concepts. It is designed for learners who already have a solid understanding of bookkeeping principles and are looking to progress towards a more professional and technical level of financial record keeping.

A key feature of the IAB Level 3 Award in Bookkeeping is that it is also partially open book, allowing learners to access learning materials for the majority of the qualification while completing assessments. It is designed to be flexible and can be completed from the comfort of your own home, making it an accessible option for a wide range of learners who wish to progress further in their bookkeeping studies.

This qualification builds on the knowledge gained at Level 2 and develops a deeper understanding of more advanced bookkeeping and accounting processes. It introduces more complex financial tasks and strengthens learners’ ability to apply their knowledge in realistic business scenarios, preparing them for greater responsibility within bookkeeping and financial roles.

The assessment structure is designed to support learner success. Three out of the four units are completed through open book knowledge tests and assignments, allowing learners to use learning materials while developing confidence and accuracy in their work. The final unit is a live assessment completed under exam conditions, ensuring learners can demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills independently.

This blended approach makes the qualification particularly suitable for learners who are progressing through the bookkeeping pathway and want to build confidence gradually while still meeting professional standards. The combination of open book assessments and a single controlled final assessment helps reduce pressure while maintaining the integrity of the qualification.

Overall, the IAB Level 3 Award in Bookkeeping develops more advanced skills and understanding, helping learners progress towards higher-level study or employment in bookkeeping, accounting, or finance roles.

Alternatively, learners who have relevant bookkeeping knowledge or practical experience may be considered for direct entry onto this qualification. In such cases, an initial assessment may be carried out to ensure the learner has the appropriate understanding to succeed at this level.

To support learning, a good standard of English and Maths is recommended, ideally at GCSE Grade 4 or equivalent.

If English is not your first language, please contact us to discuss whether additional support may be needed or available.

Please note that individuals who have been declared bankrupt or who have a criminal record may not be accepted for IAB membership, which could affect eligibility to sit examinations. We recommend contacting the IAB directly for further advice and guidance.

The qualification is assessed using three main methods: knowledge tests, assignments, and a final examination. Each method is designed to assess different aspects of understanding and practical ability within bookkeeping and accounting.

Knowledge tests are used to assess theoretical understanding of key principles. These are typically completed online and are designed to check knowledge of the subject content.

Assignments are used to assess practical skills and the ability to apply knowledge to realistic tasks. These may include completing accounting documents, processing information, or producing financial records.

The final examination is used to assess overall competence in a controlled, timed environment. This ensures that learners can demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills independently.

Pilot assessments are also available to support practice and revision before attempting the live assessments. These are not timed and can be repeated as needed to build confidence and understanding.

Overall, this combination of assessment methods ensures learners are able to demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and practical bookkeeping skills in a structured and supportive way.
